Did you know: Blue mussels (Mytilus edulis) are bivalves that attach themselves to wave-battered intertidal rocks. They do so by extending stringy fibres from their protective shell, which are produced by glands on the soft body inside. The fibres, called byssal threads, use an adhesive to cling to the rock that is comparable in strength to man-made glue, but does not contain carcinogens such as formaldehyde. This mussel glue even works under water.
